Tesla dreamt it, BMW did it: the first bulletproof electric car

BMW has revealed an armored version of its i7 electric limousine, capable of withstanding blast and ballistic fire, as well as running flat.

Here's a car that would no doubt have enabled Elon Musk and his design chief to avoid making a fool of themselves when presenting the Cybertruck in 2019. Who doesn't remember the huge screw-up when, when demonstrating the effectiveness of the pickup's armored windows, the bocce ball thrown at the side windows literally shattered the glass. Twice. Oops.

A mishap that would certainly not have happened to this BMW i7 Protection, the first 100% electric armored car. So that heads of state can get around in a bulletproof or blast-proof vehicle, or so that they can continue watching their movie on the famous 31.3-inch 8K screen in the back while the driver escapes some mishap.

Preparing for the worst

For a long time now (45 years), BMW has been developing a version like this one on the basis of every generation of BMW 7 Series, which undergoes the full VR9 treatment, one of the most comprehensive ballistic certification processes for civilian vehicles. And since the new 7 Series is now equipped with a 100% electric version, the i7, it also benefits from this treatment.

The i7 Protection, developed at the Dingolfing plant, features an armored steel body. But that's not all: the armor also covers the underside of the car, as well as the roof. So you can continue your journey without a care in the world. As for the reinforced glass, it promises to withstand fire from 7.62 X 54 R ammunition, representing the highest civilian threat.

Obviously, BMW doesn't go into too many technical details about the protection of this armored BMW i7, so as not to give any ideas to the dark forces that might be tempted to attack it. The latter may find it a little difficult to distinguish a "normal" i7 from an i7 Protection, since BMW has chosen not to give its reinforced model any external aesthetic features. This too is understandable. That said, the optional flag-bearers may be a good indication...

Staying safe in comfort

As for the interior, BMW points out that armor of all kinds doesn't encroach too much on the living space, making the i7 Protection as comfortable as any i7. In addition, we find the latest generation of BMW iDrive based on the BMW 8.5 operating system, again with the curved screen. Special functions relating to occupant protection have been added, which can be activated and controlled from the control screen's touchscreen.

As an option, there's also the possibility of opting for a camera-assisted rearview mirror, displaying the image of the rear-view camera in the panoramic view of the control screen, whatever the speed.

Performance not quite up to scratch
