Twitter's radical transformation into X: a new logo and soon a new name

Twitter owner Elon Musk has revealed his plans to radically transform the social media platform.

Elon Musk, the multi-faceted entrepreneur who has owned Twitter for the past few months, seems determined to overhaul the social media platform from top to bottom. In an announcement over the weekend of July 22, 2023, Elon Musk signaled that Twitter's iconic bluebird logo would be discontinued.

"If a good enough X logo is released tonight, we'll bring it to life around the world tomorrow," Elon Musk tweeted. The business and technology mogul added: "To embody in us all the imperfections that make us unique... And soon, we'll say goodbye to the Twitter brand and, gradually, to all birds."

Since Twitter came under the control of Elon Musk, many changes have been made to the platform, including massive layoffs, a flight of advertisers and the development of the Twitter Blue subscription offer.

The arrival of X Corp

Musk's arrival at the helm of Twitter was marked by a merger with a newly formed company called X Corp. It seems that Elon Musk sees this merger as an opportunity to transform the nature of Twitter, alluding to his desire to make the platform "X, the app of everything".

Linda Yaccarino was appointed CEO in April, with a clear mandate to work closely with Musk to accomplish his transformational vision. "I look forward to working with Linda to transform this platform into X, the app of everything," Musk had tweeted.

Elon Musk's vision: X, the app of everything

Elon Musk's philosophy for Twitter seems to center on the idea of "X", which he has often evoked in his tweets. "Buying Twitter is a gas pedal to create X, the app of everything," he once wrote.

Musk has also made significant changes to the way users interact on the platform. For example, the number of direct messages (DMs) that an unverified user - in other words, a user who hasn't signed up for the paid subscription offer - can send, has been limited. This appears to be another attempt by Elon Musk to restrict the functionality and experience of the platform's free users.

Competition continues to grow

Meanwhile, the competition continues to intensify. Meta, the company headed by Mark Zuckerberg, recently launched Threads, a platform aimed at competing directly with Twitter. Although Threads is not yet available in Europe, it has had a rapid launch, which could potentially present a challenge to Elon Musk's transformed Twitter.
