ChatGPT the Apple way: internal disputes over AI

While Apple is reportedly working on an "Apple GPT", a kind of chatbot in the style of ChatGPT, two of the company's executives are reportedly at odds over the strategy to be pursued in terms of AI. One would like to observe the evolution of ChatGPT, while the other would like to move faster.

A few days ago, we learned that Apple had developed its own language model, Apple GPT. Some employees even use it internally in their work. Rumors about Apple's entry into the generative artificial intelligence market have been circulating for months, but so far nothing has been announced. However, this could be linked to internal conflicts between two of the company's executives.

Internal conflict at Apple over AI

Specialist media AppleInsider reports that the two executives behind the project are at odds over Apple's strategy. On the one hand, there's John Giannandrea, Vice President of Machine Learning and AI Strategy. He leads research and development on generative AI and would like to wait and see how ChatGPT and other generative AI tools evolve before launching a tool on the market. Presumably, he would also like to observe the evolution of legislation in this field around the world.

As for Craig Federighi, Vice President of Software Engineering, AppleInsider makes no assertions. One might think that he would like to move faster in deploying Apple's AI tools. It's possible that he'd like to integrate a chatbot into Siri, the voice assistant on the brand's devices. As Siri is renowned for its poor performance, the arrival of an "Apple GPT" in the latter could greatly improve it.

It's also hard to say when Apple will make any announcements about its new tools. A presentation at the next keynote in September seems premature, especially as it is not intended for software updates. Depending on Apple's progress, it's possible that we'll officially hear about it in June 2024, at the next WWDC. For the time being, the firm is no doubt looking to ensure the success of Vision Pro, its first augmented reality headset.
