Unleashing the Future of Music: Exploring Google MusicLM's Cutting-Edge AI Technology

Google is developing a brand new artificial intelligence tool called MusicLM. Its principle is simple: explain in writing what kind of music you want to listen to, and the AI, in response, automatically generates some. Interested parties can sign up for a waiting list to test the AI.

Update May 11, 2023 at 12:44 pm:

On the sidelines of its Google I/O 2023, Google announced the launch of a waiting list to test MusicLM on its AI Test Kitchen site. The tool is available on web browser, Android and iOS. During this testing phase, Google wants to improve its AI, so users will have access to two versions of the song and can indicate which one they prefer.

For sure, artificial intelligence is going to be the new battle horse for multinationals in the next few years. The meteoric rise of ChatGPT has indeed reshuffled the cards and given a simultaneous kick in the anthill, even giving some big groups a cold sweat.

As a reminder, this chatbot is able to answer any query with structured, relevant, simple and complete words - even if there are some mistakes -, all in just a few seconds. Its huge success has recently pushed OpenAI to monetize its tool through a paid subscription.

MusicLM to serve You

Faced with this small revolution, the resistance is getting organized: Google is obviously in the front line to defend its interests and show what it is capable of. Here is MusicLM, the answer of the Californian giant in the field of artificial intelligence (but not with the same objective).

As its name indicates, MusicLM is tackling the musical universe. The idea is simple: you just have to write a description of a melody with more or less precision - it's up to you - and the AI will generate a musical piece that matches your search. This project was discovered via a research paper published on January 26.

The article in question is signed by a dozen Google employees. As an example, this written description is cited: a "soothing violin melody associated with a distorted guitar riff". Google also claims to be able to create a 90s techno track from Berlin with a powerful kick.

A preliminary version already online

To get a taste of its future artificial intelligence, Google has put online the MusicCaps service, which is similar to a preliminary version of MusicLM. In total, 5500 melodies generated by its AI from written text are available on the Github account of the Californian firm.

For the moment, MusicLM has not been deployed for the general public, for several reasons. Google mentions in particular issues related to plagiarism that have yet to be resolved. According to the study, 1% of the generated examples seem to roughly match existing music.

Representation and cultural appropriation are also part of the ethical challenges that Google faces.

AI at the center of attention

This first offensive of the giant shows how much artificial intelligence is at the heart of its projects. To reinforce this, we only have to look at the company's recent activities: Sergey Brin and Larry Page have simply been recalled to accelerate its AI plans.

Just recently, the four-colored colossus laid off no less than 12,000 people. It was also an opportunity for Sundar Puchai, its CEO, to remind how crucial AI was to the company's future. "We are ready to approach it in a bold and responsible way," he had explained.
